At The Portsmouth Academy we encourage parents to support us in their child’s education by contacting us with any queries or issues.  For urgent issues please contact the school via phone on 0333 360 2200.  For general enquiries, email is probably best.  Please use info@theportsmouthacademy.org.uk if you do not know which member of staff to contact.  Please be aware that most staff will be busy teaching during the school day, and may not be able to read or respond to your email immediately.

    As we are currently avoiding mass gatherings and limiting access to the school for non-staff or students, parents evenings will not take place until further notice. There will be an interim report identifying how your child is settling into the school which will be published during Autumn Term 2, and you will be able to contact your child’s tutor in the event that you have any questions or concerns.

    We use an e-payment method to pay for dinner money. This can be done online at a secure website called ParentPay or in cash at local stores where you see the PayPoint logo.

    Already have a ParentPay account?
    If you already have a ParentPay account, either with our school or with another ParentPay School, you can simply login to that account and add your other children via the “Add a child” tab on the home page. You will need an activation username and password to do this.

    New to ParentPay?

    You will have a secure online account, activated using a unique activation username and password; you will be prompted to change these and keep them safe and secure as your Username and Password for future logins.
    If you have two or more children at a ParentPay school, you only need to activate one account to create your ‘main account’ and then add your other children via the “Add a child” tab on your home page.

    ParentPay holds an electronic record of your payments to view at a later date. Once you have activated your account you can make online payments straight away.

    Online safety is a major concern for many parents, especially as our children sometimes seem to be more knowledgeable about computers, phones and other gadgets than we are.

    Pupils are taught about online safety at The Portsmouth Academy in Personal Development (PD) lessons and encouraged to be careful online, and taught ways to keep safe.  Our internet is restricted, and pupils cannot access inappropriate sites from our PCs.

    GUIDING POLICIES

    The Portsmouth Academy aims to:

    • Ensure we practice safe recruitment in checking the suitability of staff and volunteers to work with children.
    • Raise awareness of child protection issues and equip children with the skills needed to keep them safe.
    • Have in place procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases, of abuse, working alongside outside agencies to protect our students.
    • Support students who have been abused in accordance with his/her agreed child protection plan.
    • Establishing a safe environment in which children can learn and develop.
    • Be vigilant for signs of abuse.
    • Our policy applies to all staff, governors and volunteers working in the school.

    PRACTICE AND GUIDANCE

    The Policy at TPA is based on the principle of fully recognising the academy’s responsibilities for child protection. We recognise that because of the day to day contact with children, academy staff are well placed to observe the outward signs of abuse. The academy will therefore:

    • Establish and maintain an environment where children feel secure, are encouraged to talk, and are listened to.
    • Ensure children know that there are adults in the academy whom they can approach if they are worried.
    • Include opportunities in the PD curriculum for children to develop the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from abuse.

    We will follow the procedures set out by the Local Safeguarding Children Board and take account of guidance issued by the DCSF and DFE:

    • Ensure we have a designated senior person for child protection who has received appropriate training and support for this role.
    • Ensure we have a nominated governor responsible for child protection.
    • Ensure every member of staff (including temporary and supply staff and volunteers)and governing body knows the name of the designated senior person responsible for child protection and their role.
    • Ensure all staff and volunteers understand their responsibilities in being alert to the signs of abuse and responsibility for referring any concerns to the designated senior person responsible for child protection.
    • Ensure that parents have an understanding of the responsibility placed on the academy and staff for child protection by setting out its obligations in the academy prospectus.
    • Notify social services if there is an unexplained absence of more than two days of a student who is on the child protection register.
    • Develop effective links with relevant agencies and co-operate as required with their enquiries regarding child protection matters including attendance at case conferences.
    • Keep written records of concerns about children, even where there is no need to refer the matter immediately.
    • Ensure all records are kept securely, separate from the main student file, and in locked locations.
    • Develop and then follow procedures where an allegation is made against a member of staff or volunteer.
    • Ensure safe recruitment practices are always followed

    School Lunches September 2020

    We will not be using any cash payment, including the reval machine we previously used by the main hall,  All payments will need to be made by ParentPay.   Letters with login details have been posted to new year 7 parents.  For existing students who have not used the electronic system before, letters will be provided to them in the first week to bring home.  For the initial period while parents are setting up ParentPay, food and drinks can still be purchased, and the payment will taken when money is loaded into ParentPay.

    There will be a reduced menu (see link below), which will be as a “grab and go”.  For break times students will be brought down in their year group bubbles to the dining hall to get any food or drinks and then will be in the Quad area.

    At lunch times, students will be brought down in year group bubbles to dining hall and quad area for first 20 minutes.  The second 20 minutes of lunch will be on the hard standing area behind the sports hall.

    If there is bad weather students will be in the sports hall and main hall, in year group bubbles.

    Pupils will sanitise hands before entering the dining hall, and using the thumb print scanner to get food.  These will be cleaned between each bubble year group.  Thumb prints for year 7 students will be collected on the first day,  PIN codes are available as an alternative if requested.

    Free School Meals pupils get a daily allowance of £2.25 per day.  If they spend more than this (e.g. have an extra snack at breaktime) any spend over that value will be charged to their ParentPay account, and will need to be paid for.  If you wish for them to be able to spend over £2.25, you will need to add credit to your ParentPay account.

    The daily allowance is not carried over, and their balance is topped up to £2.25 every day.

    For your child to be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) you will need be in receipt of the following benefits:

    • Income Support
    • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
    • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
    • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
    • the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
    • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
    • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
    • Universal Credit – if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

    If you are in receipt of one of the benefits above, you will need to apply to Portsmouth City Council (PCC).

    Once PCC have assessed your child’s eligibility, they will send you a letter with the outcome and will include your child’s status on the weekly list that is sent to the school.

    Uniform is an important part of our Academy identity and must be worn with pride at all times. If your child does not wear the correct uniform you will be contacted. On the first occasion, where possible, your child will be loaned the correct attire for that day only. If there is a second occasion, you will be contacted and your child will be sent home to change. They should then be brought back into school.

    The shop has moved to Penhale School on Penhale Road.

    As we start to have a mixed intake, the uniform will be different for different year groups.  Please check appropriate guidance.
